Senior Creative Writing Major
I decided to join the Élan Literary Magazine (after some guidance from Élan’s faculty advisor, Mrs. Melanson) because I felt I could grow there. Élan offers a group atmosphere for people to cultivate a long-lasting final product. Even now, I believe that Élan contributed to my growth as a person. It helped me realize that I have a place in this department, and that my talents are needed. Outside of the magazine, writing helps me confront myself. Until very recently, I avoided writing about my cultural and sexual identity. I was scared, but worked hard to incorporate my own pain and experiences to create genuine pieces. Through this, I’ve gotten a better understanding of myself.
