Senior Creative Writing Major
Hot Comb by Amy Duncan in the Online 2016 Spring Edition had a significant impact on me as a writer, probably more than any other piece in the magazine I’ve read since 2013, because, for starters, I’d never before seen writing published in Élan that dealt directly with the African American experience. There may have been one or two pieces, but none ever stuck out to me, and when I read Hot Comb a light bulb went on in my head. I thought, “I’ve been through this. This was my childhood. Why have I never written or read about it before?” It allowed me to finally confront my deeply-engrained issues with race and racial identity.
